Looking for something fun to do tomorrow night? The Wabasha Street Caves in St. Paul host Swing Night every Thursday night featuring live music from one of a few different big bands, including local favorites Beasley's Big Band, as well as The Moonlight Serenaders, Minnesota Jazz Orchestra, and others. Doors open at 6 p.m., with lessons starting at 6:15 for beginners. Live music is from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and the cost is just $7 at the door.
The room is in a cavernous (literally) 12,000-square-foot underground space, with a huge hardwood dance floor, a theatrical stage, lots of dining and meeting spaces, and is decorated with a gangster-era touch. With brick walls, stucco ceilings, and a carpeted dining space, the Caves are primarily heated and cooled with geothermal energy, making it a point of interest for the environmentally-minded as well.
Besides swing dancing on Thursdays, the Caves also offer their space for rent for special events such as weddings or company meetings. There are tours of the cave available, as well as the popular Gangster Tour, which highlights the places that famous mobsters such as John Dillinger, Ma Barker, and Babyface Nelson socialized, planned and perpetrated their crimes, and hid out.
