Day 139: The Homegrown Experience

Sustainable and organic farming has been part of the public consciousness pretty consistently these days, and an increasing number of locally-owned restaurants and markets are increasing demand for locally-grown produce. Even a few nationwide chain restaurants are doing so, most notably, Chipotle, who may be partially to credit for the increased interest due to their Food With Integrity journey.

There's a new event in the Twin Cities, which happens tomorrow, Sunday August 22nd from 11am to 4pm at the Nicollet Island Pavilion. The Homegrown Experience, as it's called, is organized by the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board and will focus on sustainability, connecting people to the land and providing healthy and enjoyable experiences. The event will feature chef demonstrations, local restaurants, farmers, CSAs, co-ops, food producers, local vintners and brewers. In addition, an outdoor Farmers Market will be featured.

Visitors will be able to sip, sample and purchase food, beverages including wine from local and organic farms. Additionally, guests will also be able to learn about sustainability through the programs on the education stage. The stage will feature presentations by caterers, cooks, farmers, and authors on the benefits of sustainable and organic agriculture.

The Chef's Stage will feature presentations by Peace Coffe, chefs and restaurant owners Nina Wong, Anna Christoforides, and Molly Herrmann, and author and private chef Robin Asbell.

Although limited parking is available in the Pavilion overflow lot, your best bets for parking will be metered parking along Main Street or St. Anthony Falls Parking Ramp.

As this is a food and wine event, only those 21+ are invited, so please bring your I.D. Get your tickets online in advance for $25, or for $30 at the gate.
